The internship program serves to broaden the United States Pretrial Services Office’s commitment to providing the highest quality service and the products to the United States District Court through investigations and leading the way in community supervision and safety. The U.S. Pretrial Services Office extends its commitment to servicing the community by selecting college and university students to serve in non-compensated student intern positions.
DUTIES/ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
- Being exposed to the Federal criminal justice system
- Being exposed to a broad overview of the U.S. Pretrial Services Office
- Attending initial interviews of new arrests
- Attending court hearings daily: initial appearances, violations, arraignments, guilty pleas, trials, sentencings
- Monitoring status of firearms and passports of defendants
- Assisting Officers and performing functions as requested by Pretrial Services staff
- Contacting state and federal agencies
- Managing case files using PACTS database and PACER electronic court docket
- Performing light administrative work
- Conducting research
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bi-lingual students are strongly encouraged to apply
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or eligible to work for the U.S. Government
- Undergraduate or Graduate college student in good class standing at an accredited educational institution
- Minimum academic grade point average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale within the major
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must have good computer skills
- Must meet the minimum time requirement of twenty (20) hours per week (for at least 10 consecutive weeks); one day per week must be a full eight (8) hour day
